The DA Youth hosted its first annual public speaking contest on Saturday 31 July 2010 at Adelaars Sports and Recreation Centre in Wonderboom South. The contest aimed to inspire young people to respond intelligently to the challenges and opportunities in their community and country and to exchange original ideas to this end. The theme was “South Africa Beyond 2011″.
Ten schools participated and each fielded between 1 and 3 participants. The judging was done by councillors in the Tshwane Caucus who are also part of the Toastmasters.
Each participant had to derive a topic from the theme and construct a persuasive argument in the form of a four (4) minute prepared speech. Examples of issues that inspired topics included: the importance of young people voting in elections, the national electricity crisis and whether school pupils have sufficient access to library and information services.
All participants were also expected to do an unprepared speech on various political topics provided on the day.
Four winners were identified in the following categories, and their prizes handed over in their school assemblies:
Overall Winner: Karabo Bapela, Pretoria Technical High School Prepared
Speech Winner: Zama Madungandaba, Crawford College
Unprepared Speech Winner: Theledi Kgotso, Pretoria Technical High School
Most Promising Political Speaker: Diandri van Niekerk, Hoerskool Waterkloof
