Extract of a speech delivered by Makashule Gana, DA Youth Leader, 18 September 2010.
Democrats, we do not march to the constitutional court because we enjoy walking as a group. We are here because we love our country. We do not want to see our hard earned democracy being eroded under our watch. Not in our lifetime will we allow the government to deny us information in the name of national interest. A nation does not consist of few individuals who happen to be members of the ruling party or are ministers, but all us constitute a nation, you and me included.
Information is the lifeblood of democracy. The quickest way to kill a democracy is to deny the citizens their right to know. The Protection of Information Bill will do just that, it will take away the blood to this democracy.
If this government was clean, they would not be worried about the public knowing what they are doing. But because they have institutionalized corruption, they are worried about what will be uncovered. This very same government that is flirting with the Mugabes and Gaddafis of this world believe that they know what is in our interests. Could it be that they have successful learned from these corrupt figures how they should starve our hard earned democracy of its lifeblood.
The very same ruling party that disbanded the Scorpions now tell us that they know what is in our interests. It is not in my interest to see journalist being detained for exposing corruption.
It is not in my interest to see corruption being swept under the carpet in the name of national interest. National interest means my and your interest, and not the interest of some few politically connected individuals. This country belongs to all of us.

George Mkhwanazi says:
I fully agree with our youth leadership on the killing of a hard attained democracy by the ruling party. They want to use the information Bill to hide their dodgy deeds. As sane South Africans we should not allow that to happen as we will be betraying those inocent babies who are just born, they will ask us when we are grannies as to why we allowed the individuals to kill democracy while we could stop it? We are not amused by the party that thinks it has got super-powers to know what we need and when do we need it. Dictators always find their way of hiding things from the world and ultimately they loot all the state’s assets to make them theirs. Our local youths are now trapped in poverty and only those who are well connected to the NEC of the ANC are the only ones leading a lucritive life.
