It is disheartening, on the morning of South Africa’s human rights day, to read the ANCYL’s statement that they disapprove of Zuma’s administrations vote in favour of UN Security Council Resolution 1973 to impose a No-Fly-Zone in Libya.
Instead the ANCYL further implies that because the UN has yet to impose such a sanction on Bahrain and Yemen, that it is therefore reason enough not to sanction Libya.
This attitude of the ANCYL shows their utter disregard for the human rights of the citizens of Libya who have suffered long enough under the decades of undemocratic, dictatorial rule of the current government. Gadaffi has released the full brute of the state army on citizens, and creating an environment of fear for which he believes will keep him in power against the will of the people.
Today, on human rights day, the ANCYL has showed that human rights issues come secondary to the friendship and solidarity which they hold with fellow crony government.

Even though I do not entirely agree with the ANCYL, they do make a very valid point to consider. Even though Gadaffi’s actions are beyond human comprehension, we must question the reasoning behind the Allied strikes and UN decisions. They have failed to intervene in numerous places around the world where autocratic leaders maul their citizens, but were falling over themselves to attack a North African oil stronghold… At least this time they didn’t come up with that bull story about WMD’s.
