The Democratic Alliance (DA) Youth welcomes the endorsement of the Youth Wage Subsidy by the KwaZulu Natal (KZN) ANC provincial executive committee (PEC).

The PEC statement follows a prior endorsement by ANC provincial chairperson and KZN Premier, Zweli Mkhize, who backed the rollout of a wage subsidy “without delay”.

I challenge Mr Mkhize to show that he is serious about a Youth Wage subsidy by joining the call by Western Cape Premier Helen Zille for provinces who are willing to rollout the subsidy to be given a share of the R5billion already budgeted by National Treasury.

Statements and posturing by Mr Mkhize and the provincial ANC are not enough when the need for job creation is so great among young people.

They must move from words to action now. In the coming days we will increase the pressure on Mr Mkhize to put his money where his mouth is.

On Monday, June 11, the DA will lead a march to the KZN Premier’s offices to urge him to formally request that National Treasury transfer funds to KZN for the rollout of the Youth Wage subsidy.

Failure to do so will show that the provincial government is only paying lip-service to jobs.
